Maleficent Deep Review English version (Spoiler Alert!)

(Don’t expect perfect English)

This 21st. Century version of Sleeping Beauty is different from the Brothers Grimm one, thus, a lot of good traditional & psychological meanings are distorted. However, I find it is interesting to analyse anyway. In this post I will analyse 2 main characters, Maleficent and Aurora,  try to figure out why the princess sleeps, What is the meaning of the spinning wheel, and why Maleficent is allergic to iron.

The story begins with the breaking apart between two worlds, human’s and fairy’s. (The magical forest, Moors) This could mean the split between intra psychic, the consciousness and the unconscious. The Greedy boy, Stefan had got good things inside but too stupid to see their value. He cut her wings of Freedom & took away her pride to trade with external material wealth & power. Greedy & selfish love usually ends up this way. Two worlds split.

Maleficent’s land is full of mythical creatures, abundant of resources, very beautiful and anything seems possible there. It’s the source of life. Thus,  human wants to take it badly. However, it cannot be taken by force but by making good relationship.

The name of Maleficent should be Magnificent, the Best thing, the most beautiful one but the dark side get in, so it becomes Mal or bad. Moreover, could be seen as Male which can be “Animus Possession” in Jungian psychology, means female who get possessed by negative masculine/animus side and so lacks of good feminine quality. As a result, she turns wild, cruel and vengeful, and her forest turns dark and lifeless.

When love turns sour like thousand of thorns prick one’s heart,  Maleficent’s heart is full of hatred, anger, and vengence. The dark side takes charge the bright side splits off. New character, Aurora emerges. Aurora simply means light, like Eos, the Greek Goddess of the Dawn. She represents consciousness, light, hope, new beginning, purity, and yes, love.  Aurora is the opposite side of Maleficent. They are two sides of the same coin.

Secretly observing the adorable baby softens Maleficent’s heart. She sees the bright side of herself through Aurora. Love grows within from the interaction between them. (making relationship with one’s own mind)

Aurora can get inside the magical forest through her sleeping as Maleficent casts a spell on her and take her in, and again makes Aurora sleeps and takes her back to the bed. (Listen Once Upon a Dream along will get the right feeling). The same as when Maleficent makes Prince Phillip sleeps and walks through the thorny path to meet the sleeping Aurora (unconscious Aurora). Through dream, one can connect with the magical forest or the unconscious.

Why the spinning Wheel? To make a yarn has to twist fiber together and roll it before weaving them into fabric. We wear clothes to cover our bodies for warmth, vanity, and protection. On the other hand, it could be seen as our relationship with others. We make good relationship and that make us feel warm, we make bad relationship and it put us in trouble. There are a few words like, loom of destiny, fabric of fate, wheel of fortune which is similar to Eastern concept of the wheel of Dhrama or Karma, means one will face the consequences of what one did. And life has up & down cycle like the spinning wheel. It’s destiny. So I will conclude here that the spinning wheel is a symbol of one’s fate according to one’s deed.

Why the needle/spindle pricks the index finger? The needle could mean bad love or bad relationship that hurt us. The needle/spindle is a tool to make a yarn but it also could hurt us if one is not conscious when using it. In this story the needle is made of iron which Maleficent is allergic to (will explain in the next paragraph) For Index finger, we normally use to point to things we want and point to direction we’d like to go but when the heart is broken, bad relationship pricks this finger. One get lost, lacks of sense of direction, confused of what one want, forgets who one is, loses consciousness, turns to the dark side, and thus, the princess goes asleep or goes unconscious. The unconscious dark side (the vengeful curse of Maleficent) consumes the light of consciousness (Aurora).

Why Maleficent Allergic to iron? Maleficent could be an archetypal image which is Anima or inner feminine side. She also can be seen as the Mother Earth as she is the master of trees, animals and nature, She is life energy and fertility. Iron is a natural mineral but gotta be mined and cast and so on to make it becomes weapons, tools, accessories. It represents “man-made material” which could be either positive or negative things. However, it is made from human greed. Thus, Maleficent get hurt or weaken by iron things as they are the opposites. One raw nature (Nurture) and the other one, processed nature (exploited) It’s greed of humans that hurt Maleficent, and that greed also hurts human themselves. [a friend told me that iron could mean masculinity/animus]

Why Maleficent get her wings back? As her anger and vengeful feelings are gone. She kisses the light with pure love, she unites her own bright side back in, result in the awaken of Aurora. The uniting leads Aurora to find the caged wings and set them free. The light, hope, and pure love set Maleficent free from darkness. She becomes full once again, be free and powerful and could defeat the greedy masculine, King Stefan.

There is no need of the thorny wall as now two worlds are united and ruled by the light. Maleficent supports Aurora. The consciousness get positive life energy from the unconscious, no split personality, and Happy Ending.

The Dream of Noah, English Version

Image

Note: SPOILER ALERT!
My friend, Rustic Moon, helped me translate The Dream of Noah from my Thai version (posted on 21/04/14) into this English one, Thank you. I’m too busy to do it myself. Anyway I added some more interpretation into this version.

Through Analytical psychology lens, in this post, I analyzed the whole Noah story as a big crisis within a human psyche, and emphasized on dreams.

When the world, that is Noah’s mind, breaks into a pair of opposites; good against evil, and reason/duty against feeling/love. This kind of inner conflict whether happens in one’s mind or in a society, usually results in a collapse. It could drive the person to madness, and the society to war.

In the story, Noah received God’s message through prophetic dreams. Since the earliest time, human beings believe in the importance of dreams as messages from gods. However, the rise of empirical science that takes truth only as things which can be measured, such as in term of electricity or energy, has been treating the knowledge of dreams as superstitious and without substance. Dream interpretations only regained serious interest after Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung used dreams in psychotherapy. They believe that dreams are messages from the unconscious (Frued’s subconscious or Jung’s unconscious) which help ego-consciousness to understand itself, the bigger self. The unconscious contents contain both good and bad things, such as inner potential, complexes, repressed emotion/story, which many times as to compensate what ego-consciousness lacks. Many patients improved their conditions when they understood the meaning of their dream contents and made adjustment to their lives. Of course, one does not need to wait and become mad before starting to understand one’s own dreams.

What if dream is a message from the depth of our mind, and God who sent the message is actually our inner wisdom? This inner wisdom is telling the shallow ego that if one is to continue living in this extreme way, there will be the end of the world, his world (of course, this could be seen as Global Warming issue too.) The water comes from above and below to flood one’s mind, to clean it. Human body contains over 70% of water, however, with too much water, we die. This is also true from psychological perspective. Water is usually a symbol of unconscious, while the ego is like the land or mountain emerges from the water. If water, or the unconscious, is too powerful, the ego will be flooded and lost itself and becomes mad.

In one’s psyche, Noah psyche, has both good and evil, for example, instinctive animal side (all the animals in the ark), positive masculine (Noah) evil masculine (the King, Tubal-Cain), wise old man (Noah’s grand father), loving feminine (Noah’s wife, Naameh), children with potential to grow). As in Noah’s vision of seeing himself as a part of the crowd who tore animal flesh alive to eat, he found that, he himself also was wicked. He was not better than others, and so are we. This fact is hard to accept.

When life breaks into two opposites, the good side is pure while the evil one is also purely evil. The world is breaking and the storm of emotions surges to bring water to clean the messy mind. Inner wisdom warned Noah to build a ship, the vessel to protect his mind and to select good things into his ship for the new beginning (of a new ego.) Animals are instinctive side that one must have for survival and these selected animals can be controlled consciously. This can be seen symbolically through the burning of the herbal incense that made those animals slept which prevented them from fighting and biting each other. However, evil still hid inside Noah’s mind (Noah’s ark), as Noah became one-sided and blindly believed that he was given the duty of destroying humanity. When the the perception is unsounded, the consciousness is weak, the evil side gets stronger and causes conflicts and fighting in the ship; husband versus wife and children, duty versus love, rationality versus irrationality.

The climax was reached when Noah could not bring himself to kill his own twin grand daughters as the reason became love, and his killing duty turned to be protection instead. Those Children, therefore, are the symbol of new beginning which is full of potentials. When Noah’s conflicting pair of broken opposites are reunited, then, a new & bigger continent was found. Noah’s shallow and one-sided old ego was broken (his ark was torn apart). He could not forgive himself and isolated himself for a while, till the positive feminine side represented by his step daughter, Ila, came to ask why he didn’t kill her daughters. It’s because of love. Then he regained his self-esteem and returned to his family. And the envious son left as in the house of love there is no room for envy. His new world was full of love, empathy, forgiveness, and possibilities. Human beings have survived for such a long time because of these qualities. Love spins the world, both inner and outer world.
